The Foot Health team at Youville Diabetes
Centre includes the Foot Health Nurse (RN) and a Podiatrist (a Foot
Doctor) working together to best manage your foot health needs.
The Foot Health Nurse will:
- Review your health history
- Examine and assess your feet and footwear
- Identify risks for foot complications
- Teach you how to look after your feet and prevent foot problems
- Help you with foot care when you are not able to do it yourself, including:
- Nail trimming, especially thick nails
- Management of corns, calluses
- Management of dry, cracked skin
- Refer you to the Podiatrist as needed
- Help you plan any ongoing foot care you may need
The Podiatrist will:
- Do advanced testing of circulation and nerve endings in your feet
- Diagnose any problems with the way your bones and muscles work together
- Diagnose the cause(s) of foot pain
- Write you prescriptions for footwear, insoles or orthotics
- Do advanced treatment of calluses, corns and problem nails
- Help you plan any ongoing foot care you may need

The Services of the Foot Health Team:
- Are not covered provincial health care
- Are done on a fee for service basis
- Are covered by many health insurances plans such as Blue Cross
- Are covered by Veteran’s Benefits
- Are claimable as a medical expense on income tax
- May be partially covered by Social Assistance with doctor’s prescription and approval from case worker
