Foot Health and Prevention Program

The Foot Health team at Youville Diabetes Centre includes the Foot Health Nurse (RN) and a Podiatrist (a Foot Doctor) working together to best manage your foot health needs.

The Foot Health Nurse will:

  • Review your health history
  • Examine and assess your feet and footwear
  • Identify risks for foot complications
  • Teach you how to look after your feet and prevent foot problems
  • Help you with foot care when you are not able to do it yourself, including:
  • Nail trimming, especially thick nails
  • Management of corns, calluses
  • Management of dry, cracked skin
  • Refer you to the Podiatrist as needed
  • Help you plan any ongoing foot care you may need

The Podiatrist will:

  • Do advanced testing of circulation and nerve endings in your feet
  • Diagnose any problems with the way your bones and muscles work together
  • Diagnose the cause(s) of foot pain
  • Write you prescriptions for footwear, insoles or orthotics
  • Do advanced treatment of calluses, corns and problem nails
  • Help you plan any ongoing foot care you may need

The Services of the Foot Health Team:

  • Are not covered provincial health care
  • Are done on a fee for service basis
  • Are covered by many health insurances plans such as Blue Cross
  • Are covered by Veteran’s Benefits
  • Are claimable as a medical expense on income tax
  • May be partially covered by Social Assistance with doctor’s prescription and approval from case worker
